Rome

Rome is the easiest civilization in the game to play well — a straightforward expansion-and-infrastructure identity that rewards good habits over any narrow strategy.

Unique Ability

"All Roads Lead to Rome": every Roman city starts with a Trading Post, new cities founded within trade range of the capital automatically get a road connection, and Trade Routes earn extra Gold for each Roman trading post they pass through. Trajan's own leader ability, "Trajan's Column," gives every founded city a free building in its City Center — a Monument in the early game.

Unique Unit: Legion

An Ancient era melee unit (replacing the Swordsman, base Combat Strength 40) that can construct a Roman Fort on the tile it occupies and repair tile improvements at no Builder-charge cost — giving Rome unusual early flexibility to defend and rebuild after capturing new territory.

Unique Infrastructure: Bath

The Bath replaces the Aqueduct, costs about half as much Production, and grants extra Housing and an Amenity — cities without natural fresh water access get roughly as much benefit as those settled on a river.

How to Play Rome

  • Expand early and often — automatic roads and trading posts mean a wide empire stays connected without the usual infrastructure grind.
  • Route Trade Routes through as many of your own cities as possible to stack the extra Gold from each trading post they pass through.
  • Use the Legion's Fort ability to secure new settlements quickly instead of waiting for standard defenses.
