Civilization VII · Antiquity Age

Egypt

Egypt's identity is built entirely around Navigable Rivers — settle and build along one, and almost everything about the civilization starts working together.

Historically paired with Hatshepsut — mix-and-match with any leader is fully supported, but this pairing is the game's own suggested starting point.

Unique Ability

"Gifts of Osiris": increased Production toward constructing Buildings and Wonders in cities adjacent to a Navigable River. This pairs directly with the leader Hatshepsut's own ability, "God's Wife of Amun," which also increases Production toward Buildings and Wonders in cities adjacent to Navigable Rivers — picking both together stacks the same bonus rather than diversifying it.

Unique Unit

The Medjay is a unique Infantry unit with no maintenance cost that gets +3 Combat Strength in friendly territory, rising to +6 when stationed inside one of your own Settlements. The Tjaty is a unique Great Person Unit, trainable only in Cities with a Necropolis, with the specific individual received at random from a pool (including figures like Hemiunu, who adds a burst of Production to a Wonder currently under construction) — each can only be received once, and cost rises with every Tjaty already trained.

Unique Infrastructure

The Necropolis is a Unique Quarter formed by building the Mastaba (Culture, plus Gold adjacency with Desert, Navigable Rivers, and Wonders) and the Mortuary Temple (Gold, plus Happiness adjacency with Navigable Rivers and Culture adjacency with Wonders, Ageless) together in the same district — and it's the only place Tjaty can be trained.

How to Play Egypt

  • Prioritize a start with Navigable River access — Egypt underperforms without one, since its entire identity depends on that terrain feature.
  • Pairing Egypt with Hatshepsut is the game's own recommended beginner combination for exactly this reason: the bonuses reinforce each other instead of spreading you thin.
  • Watch for Navigable River tiles specifically (marked distinctly from ordinary river tiles) when deciding where to expand.
  • Build the Necropolis as early as your Production allows — it's a hard prerequisite for Tjaty, and the individual bonuses can be genuinely game-changing depending on which one you draw.
