Ottomans

The Ottomans convert archaeology and conquest into the same resource, rewarding a playstyle that specifically targets rivals sitting on unexcavated history.

Unique Ability

"Devlet-i ʿAlīye-i ʿOsmânîye": whenever any leader excavates an Artifact within Ottoman territory, the Ottomans generate an additional Artifact for themselves. Infantry and Naval units also receive increased Combat Strength when attacking.

Unique Unit

The Janissary is a unique Infantry unit with increased Combat Strength against other Land Units — but every Janissary stationed in or occupying a District inflicts a Happiness penalty on that Settlement, a genuine drawback that discourages garrisoning them everywhere by default. The Barbary Corsair is a unique Light Naval unit that costs no Movement to Coastal Raid.

Unique Infrastructure

The Sultanahmet Camii is Ottomans' unique building, granting Happiness and boosting Culture and Gold on Wonders in its Settlement — with a bigger bonus for Exploration-Age Wonders and an even bigger one for Antiquity-Age Wonders. It must be built adjacent to another Wonder.

How to Play Ottomans

  • Watch for Archaeology Sites inside rival territory specifically — the Ottoman kit rewards capturing those Settlements more than generic conquest.
  • Let other civilizations do some of the excavation work near your borders; their activity inside your territory still benefits you directly.
  • Lean on the Infantry and Naval combat bonus for the actual conquest phase once you've identified a target worth taking.
  • Use Janissaries for offense rather than permanent garrison duty — stationing them long-term costs real Happiness, so rotate them out once a conquest is secure.
