Australia's terrain-yield bonuses reward beautiful, well-developed cities directly, and John Curtin's own ability rewards a defensive, reactive playstyle over an aggressive one.

Unique Ability

"Land Down Under" grants +3 Housing in coastal cities, has Pastures trigger a Culture Bomb, and gives Campus, Commercial Hub, Holy Site, and Theater Square yields a bonus on Charming tiles (+1) and Breathtaking tiles (+3). Curtin's own ability, "Citadel of Civilization," grants +100% Production for 10 turns after Australia either receives a declaration of war or liberates a city — a genuine comeback mechanic rather than a steady-state bonus.

Unique Unit: Digger

A Modern era unit replacing Infantry, with +10 Combat Strength fighting on Coastal tiles and +5 fighting on Neutral or Foreign Territory.

Unique Infrastructure: Outback Station

A unique improvement buildable on Desert, Desert Hills, Grassland, or Plains, providing Food and Production that scale up further as you advance through the tech and civic trees, with an extra Food bonus for each adjacent Pasture.

How to Play Australia

  • Invest in tile Appeal deliberately — Australia's core districts get a real, scaling bonus on Charming and Breathtaking tiles that most civilizations don't chase this hard.
  • Keep some Pastures unimproved near cities you want to expand culturally — the Culture Bomb on Pastures is a real, repeatable border tool.
  • Don't fear being attacked — the Production surge from Citadel of Civilization means a declared war against Australia can backfire on the aggressor.
